About Outfitter: Kiwi Safaris – New Zealand – 2012
Welcome to Kiwi Safaris, New Zealand owned and operated for over 20 years. Located on the south island, arguably the more spectacular of the two, they offer the very best in free range and estate hunting on two properties owned by Kiwi. The 34,000 acre Dry Creek property offers the ultimate in free range hunting. It is renowned to be the best tahr hunting block in New Zealand, if not in the world. And, being privately owned the hunter does not have to compete with other outfitters or meat hunters, as is the case with many hunting companies who depend on public land for their tahr hunting. Further more, Kiwi DOES NOT use helicopters to hunt tahr, they hunt on foot. They state that anyone in reasonable physical condition can get their tahr on Dry Creek. It is not unusual to see twelve or more shooter bulls per day of hunting. Also, Kiwi has taken more archery tahr than any other outfitter in New Zealand.
As great as their tahr hunting is, Kiwi’s red stag hunting is second to none. Their 7000 acre Stew Point Station Estate (fenced) is the largest such property in New Zealand devoted entirely to hunting. Silver medal stags (300-319 SCI) are abundant and from there the sky is the limit. The largest stags taken to date have been in excess of 600 SCI points. Free range stag are available on the Dry Creek property but are very difficult to hunt and seldom exceed 300 SCI. Therefore, most hunters prefer to hunt their stag at Stew Point. However, if someone is determined to take a free range stag they should indeed come prepared to “walk and stalk the game.”
Other game available on the two above properties is; chamois, fallow buck, ram, goat, elk and whitetail. Kiwi also offers wild boar (on the south island), sika, rusa and sambar stag (all on the north island). All hunting takes place on private properties.
In addition to hunting we can arrange a variety of activities for non-hunters or even those hunters who may need a break. Also keep in mind the seasons are reversed to those here in the northern hemispheres. Summer in the USA is winter in New Zealand.

The Hunts
Bull Tahr – The tahr is a true alpine animal, with only the Rocky Mountain goat challenging him as king of the mountain. Both sexes have horns but those of the bulls are longer and heavier. However it is not just the horns that make a fine trophy, the lion-like mane on the bulls is just as important as horn length. A big bull can weigh 300 pounds and can be tough to put down, so a flat shooting rifle from 7mm magnum, on up to a 338 is recommended.
Red Stag – The most sought after trophy in New Zealand by foreign hunters, the red stag was introduced in 1851. With the temperate climate and lack of predators they have flourished. About the size of a large mule deer buck, any rifle from 270 on up will suffice, although it should be relatively flat shooting.
Fallow Buck – Introduced in 1864, fallow deer are now the second most common deer species in New Zealand, and behind red stag have become the second most sought deer. Kiwi offers both free range and estate hunting and trophies scoring 230 SCI are not uncommon.
Chamois – A member of the antelope family, chamois have exceptional eyesight and the ability to run effortlessly through the roughest terrain. Both bucks and does have horns but those of does are usually much thinner. Being a small animal a large caliber rifle is not needed, but it must be flat shooting and have good optics. Since they live in our roughest terrain, a chamois hunt is our most physically demanding.
New Zealand Elk – Introduced in 1905, elk represent the largest deer species in New Zealand. Every year bulls in the 300-400 SCI class are taken, both with rifle and bow.
The Asian Deer – The sika, sambar and rusa deer are all of Asian origin. Hunting them will require a trip to the north island as they prefer the more temperate climate there. Size wise the sambar is second only to the elk.
Other Game – Feral goats are widespread in New Zealand but finding a truly big billy can be a challenge. The Aparawa rams are descendents of fine merino wool sheep left on Aparawa Island as a source of food for returning sealers and whalers. They have developed into a distinctive breed with the rams sporting large curling hors which make an eye catching trophy. Pigs were first released by Captain Cook in 1773, also as a food source, and are found throughout the islands.
Bow Hunting – Kiwi Safaris host more bow hunters than any other hunting company in New Zealand. One look at the bow portion of the SCI record book will tell you why. All bow hunting is spot and stalk and all is on foot. It is recommended that bow hunters come earlier in the season, late February to May, when the days are longer, the game more settled and the access better.
