If you are looking for a good Canada moose or a color phase black bear we now have the connections to help you get one!

John and Mary Lou Blackwell, of Fawnie Mountain Outfitters, have lived, outfitted and guided in their area of British Columbia for 40 years. Living in the area and flying fishermen about through the summer months they know where the game lives. Their 1,500 square mile exclusive guiding concession lies partially within the Chilcotin Wilderness, an area known for its high moose population and no vehicular access.

Over the years John has averaged 95% success on moose, with many good bulls taken each year. On the spring bear hunts, success has run 170% as many hunters take two. Archers familiar with the spot and stalk method of hunting have enjoyed 70% success.

Moose

John does three 10 day moose hunts each fall, starting in mid-September through mid-October. He typically takes only a total of 20 hunters per season. You are met at Anahim Lake, which has commercial air service three days a week from Vancouver, and flown directly to a moose camp (cabin or tent) or the lodge on Moose Lake. Many nice moose are taken from the lodge each year, especially on the two later hunts. Mature bulls typically range from 40-55 inch spread.

John has successfully guided hunters in all physical condition, ranging from 14 to 80 years of age. My Vietnam injuries are catching up with me and I had about given up hope of ever getting a moose, but John assures me that if I can crawl into a boat he can get me a shot at a bull. My condition is not yet that bad, but you get the idea.

Hunting typically is by boat, horseback, or foot. Out of your 10 days you will get in, if needed, at least 9 days of hunting. Very good to excellent rainbow trout fishing is available at most camps and definitely at the lodge.

2012 rates are $6,750 US 2X1 and $8,250 1X1. A non-hunting companion is $2,000. This rate includes all necessary flying to get you in and you, your trophy and meat back to Anahim Lake. A non-resident alien hunting license is $180 CAN, moose tag $250, Non-Resident Hunting Preservation Fee $125. ALL fees are subject to a 6% tax. Bear and wolf are also available, but success only runs around 20% in the fall. In addition to a bear tag, $180 CAN, there is an $1,000 US kill fee if a bear is taken. A wolf tag is $50 CAN.

Bear

John offers two 7 day bear hunts, May 25-31 and June 1-7. He only takes six hunters per hunt. The bears are fresh out of the den; hungry, easy to stalk and their pelts are prime.

Bear hunters are met in Prince George, which has commercial air service, and taken to camp. All hunting is spot and stalk, however long hikes are seldom necessary. Bears typically square from 5.5 to 8 feet and as previously stated color phases are to be found. After you get your bear you can be flown to the lodge on Moose Lake to enjoy some fantastic rainbow trout fishing, for no additional charge. The bear camp is heated tents. The weather during this time is usually quite pleasant, lows in the 30’s and highs in the 50’s. No need for hip boots and very little need for rain gear. Bugs, mosquitoes and black flies are typically not a problem.

2011-12 rates are $4,750 US 2X1 or $6,000 1X1. If you kill a second bear there is an $1,000 kill fee. Non-resident alien hunting license is $180 CAN, bear tags are $180 each and the Non-Resident Hunting Preservation fee is $125. If you wish to try for two bears it is advisable to buy both tags up front. Again, ALL fees are subject to a 6% tax.
