Elephants on the Nyae Nyae Conservancy

SMJ Safaris – Namibia, Africa
Nyae Nyae Conservancy

About Outfitter: SMJ Safaris Nyae

2012 will be Stephan’s first year to hunt Nyae Nyae, which is Bushman for porcupine.

This is a unique area situated in the northeast corner of Namibia. It can truly be called wilderness as it has fewer than 2,000 permanent residents. It covers 2.4 million acres, just a little larger than Yellowstone National Park. The terrain is relatively flat bush veldt and all the game there is naturally occurring. The camp, consisting of three East African safari tents with en-suite bath, is situated in a grove of baobab trees. A nearby water hole attracts elephant and other game on a regular basis. The dining and lounge area is situated around the base of one of the giant trees. The camp gives one the feel of safari days gone by, yet with most of the modern conveniences.

The biggest attraction to Nyae Nyae will undoubtedly be the potential for a truly large elephant; several 100 pounders have been taken in the past few years. It also offers excellent leopard hunting. Lion, although not hunted, are present and add a little spice to the hunting experience.

However, it also offers another unique opportunity; a plains game hunt reminiscent of days gone by. A place where you, your PH and San Bushman tracker can get lost in its vastness. The list of plains game is not extensive, limited to native species. Some are abundant with excellent trophy quality, while others are less abundant. Hunting here is not easy as it involves a lot of walking. Even much of the plains game is hunted by tracking. The old African saying, “You kill an elephant with your legs,” is as true today as ever. So come prepared to walk a lot, especially for trophy elephant.
